    What is iMed ?
iMed is a powerful electronic system for storage of data from patients with Multiple Sclerosis. It allows you to manage and display all the important information about your patients, including their medical history, neurological status, relapses, treatments, neurological rating scores on various scales (EDSS, Scripps Neurological Rating Scale (SNRS)), and results on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and evoked-potentials tests (see figure 1).
iMed has an intuitive user interface and clear data structure, which allows you to become immediately productive. In particular, iMed provides interactive graphical charts, which allow you to quickly analyze data on multiple patients, or to drill-down to the details on a specific patient.
By providing secure multi-user support, iMed allows physicians in a hospital or medical center to share a single patient database between multiple users and assign appropriate rights and data access privileges to each user account.
Currently available in ten languages (Brazilian, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian and Dutch), iMed is used by over 1000 users worldwide, for a total of more than 150'000 patient files recorded!
    User interfaces
      iMed has two main interfaces:
      • the Individual view - to enter patient data and view information on each patient separately
      • the Global view - to view graphical displays of data for all patients in the database or selected subsets
      The Individual view
For each patient, data can be entered and viewed in 5 distinct sections. Items covered by all sections are mapped in figure 2.
A general overview of a patient evolution over time is also possible through a graphical display of all key data on one screen.
A unique feature of iMed, called Flexifields, allows users to create an unlimited number of customizable data fields to capture any information of interest for specific research areas. Also, an external Reporting module makes it possible to create individualized templates for letters or patient reports, which can integrate patient-specific data (e.g. referral letters).
      The Global view
In the global view, users can display graphs summarizing data for all patients in the database. Graphs on the following items can be displayed:
      • Course of the disease
      • Current Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score
      • Relapse rate
      • Age at onset of MS
      • Duration of MS
      • Current MS-specific treatments
Queries can be programmed and run using a simple and powerful search panel, and then stored for future use.
    Data entry
Data entry for a new patient takes approximately 15 minutes, depending on the number of fields used. Entry of follow-up data takes approximately 5-7 minutes. Confidentiality and access are maintained through the use of a login name and password.
An external Data Import module facilitates the transfer of legacy data from MS Excel files or plain text files to iMed.
